29.10.18 – Mission Accomplished

Some of you may have read from my previous blogs that I set myself the challenge of running a 5K. I started to follow the Couch to 5K NHS program 6 weeks ago. Its a 9 week course but I found it hard work, especially on my calves and knees. I visited a running shoe specialist store in Birmingham called Up & Running. They measured my gait and tried on some shoes that may provide me more support. Unfortunately I didn’t find any that I felt comfortable in. They suggested visiting a sports physio instead. I had a good experience there as they gave me good advice whilst not trying to sell me an expensive running shoe. I found an old pair of trainers I hadn’t used in a while. They were much better fitting, more space in the shoe and felt much more cushioned on my feet. This really helped my performance.

THEN THIS HAPPENED! Yesterday, I don’t know how I managed it, but I managed to run a 5K. I started off as normal, a brisk 5 minute walk, followed by what I thought would be a 5 minute run, then 3 min walk, alternating between the two. I wasn’t getting any knee or calf pain so I just kept going. The gym was fairly busy and so found it motivating to have a few others running next to me. There was one man in particular who jumped on the treadmill right next to me, walked to start, then started running. At this point, I had been running for 5 mins, so I could have stopped for a break. I noticed that he kept using his gym towel to cover the treadmill display to stop him from counting down the time. I started to do this using my gym jacket so that I couldn’t watch the time. During my run, I had to google how long 5K was in miles, because the treadmill counted the distance in miles. I probably could have changed it and I believe there is a button for 5K, however as it wasn’t planned so I never used it. I didn’t want to mess about with buttons at this point, so I just counted 3.1 miles.

Here is the proof! 3.11 miles completed! This was counting the 5 mins brisk walk, so to make it fair, I brisk walked another 5 mins post run.

So now for my next challenge. Any ideas?
