23.11.18 – Huge Progress!

Woohoo! I managed to look after 6 patients with help from a keen second year student nurse. Until now I’ve been looking after max 3 patients or helping out another nurse with their patients. Yesterday I took on a bay by myself with a little help from others. I knew exactly what was happening with my patients, was able to update drs and relatives. I also wanted to do well for my student so that she could learn as much as she could whilst working with me.

At least now, when I’m not supernumerary anymore, I’ll feel ready. I haven’t been able to take on the full nurse roll for a long time! Slow and steady wins the race, and it definitely has been slow progress but worth it.

Im getting on well with my new tablets so far. They are easier to take as they are only taken once daily, instead of twice daily. Hopefully my bloods are still stable. I’ll have a routine appointment on Monday, which involves having my bloods taken.

I’ve been visiting a girl in hospital who I met whilst I was an inpatient. I was introduced to her through the youth support workers who support you through transitioning from child to adult care. She’s the same age as me but unfortunately is now waiting for another liver transplant a year after her first one. Her family live quite far away so I thought it would be nice to support her and keep her company. She’s doing ok but it still makes me sad about what’s happened. What amazes me is that she’s so positive, and always laughing about something! I really hope she gets her new liver in time for Xmas. That’s all I’m going to wish for.🤞🏼I’m praying for you girl! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

  1. Hi there Beautiful ! Glad your really coming along ! Good to read. I am glad you are helping someone through the process. It can be a scary thing when you don’t know what to expect. I did the same with someone i met through a mutual friend. Sadly his cancer got the best of him before they could knock it down. What meds do they have you on now? I am on Rapamune & Mycophenolate. They originally had me on Tacrolimus but that was to hard on my kidneys. All good for last 3 yrs now. Well it is good to see you in such good shape and great spirits. All the best Olivia.

    1. Hi! Hope you are well. I’m just about to visit my friend now that I’m done in clinic today. I’m on Advograf 8mg once daily. When did you change from Tacrolimus? It’s great that you were able to support someone too. Good to hear from you.

      1. Hi Olivia
This your friend that needs another transplant your going to see ? If so give her my best from Winnipeg , Canada . Tell her to put her faith in God’s hands and her health in the Dr’s hands and everything will be ok .
The tac they took me off within a year . It was wreaking havoc with my bowels and my kidney numbers kept deteriorating .
So they put me on Rapamune (sirolimus) and everything levelled out after that .
Not sure if I mentioned it but before my transplant my kidneys shut down for couple weeks and I had to go on dialysis . After my operation they started working again after 2 or 3 days but suffered some 50% degradation to which I still am running on but they are not deteriorating and have been stable ever since .
I truly believe going to the gym 6 days / week keeps me healthy and strong .

      2. She’s hopefully going to theatre tomorrow morning! I’m not yet strong enough to go as often as you but I try and walk around and do as much as I can each day. I’m sure I’ll be feeling stronger each day.

  2. I have been following your blog since my son had his transplant in February and I stumbled across it! He was 16 at the time and he had the same surgeon as you. He is about to change from prograf to advagraf, it will make things so much easier. Hope you have a lovey Christmas!
