I’m always keen to get involved with spreading awareness in organ donation, so approached, NHS Blood and Transplant to offer any help. They gave me the opportunity to be featured in an article in The Mirror online.
Today the MPs debated the legislation to bring in an ‘opt-out’ system for organ donation.
A similar opt-out system is already in place in Wales and more people there are now consenting to donate their organs, up from 58% in 2011/12 to 64% in 2016/7.
However, the number of donors has not actually increased since the law changed in December 2015, and the number of transplants also decreased in 2016/17.
Experts say this may be because it’s still too early to judge the impact, but also because there may have been fewer eligible donors over that period. (Shaddick 2018, Sky News)
I’m not sure how much difference it’ll make to have the new system in place. I’m just glad it’s got people talking.
If you want to have your say about it all, you have until the 6th March 2018.
